<br />
<br />
It's my favorite time of year again...Halloween! Since fairy houses are so dang cute, I thought why not make a pumpkin fairy house? Plus I get to play with a craft tool I am in love with right now - my Mod Podge Mod Melter!<br />
<br />
The Mod Melter is different from a traditional glue gun. It heats up really fast and super hot. The melter has it's own special uber long melt sticks in white, clear, silver, gold, and some basic colors. The glue stays "melty" for a time so it makes it the perfect tool to create your own flexible items to accessorize any item with. The Melts won't stick to silicone so I use the Mod Podge silicone craft mat for all of my doodles. <br />
<br />
Let's get started. You can do this too!<br />
<br />
Supplies you will need:<br />
<br />
• Craftable Pumpkin<br />
• Craft knife<br />
• Mod Melter and White Melts<br />
• Silicone Craft Mat<br />
• White Home Decor Chalk Paint<br />
• FolkArt Multi-Surface Acrylic Paints<br />
• Scissors<br />
• Paint Brushes<br />
• Plastic Sheet<br />
• Tracing Paper, Pencil and Marker<br />
• Hot Glue Gun<br />
• Large round wooden disc and small wooden disc<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF9NRPget6Q-rLKsYtOEp-HXO9_rZ8nFZZKwLJUYi2KtT8DU9iDQkCl-MorcrpIjZ5O3bASrvMFbjoI9m7yjcAlCCo4vyxeHcuc7fPnZ8cGWO7s3K53zqplhZImn0nLsbESDWjHSKbAjIS/s1600/IMG_3066.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF9NRPget6Q-rLKsYtOEp-HXO9_rZ8nFZZKwLJUYi2KtT8DU9iDQkCl-MorcrpIjZ5O3bASrvMFbjoI9m7yjcAlCCo4vyxeHcuc7fPnZ8cGWO7s3K53zqplhZImn0nLsbESDWjHSKbAjIS/s400/IMG_3066.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You can also use a wood burner tool with blade<br />
attachment for easily cutting through craft pumpkins.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Draw and cut out the windows and a small door window. Also cut a small hole in the back to add a light. Trace the window and door opening on a piece of tracing paper. Transfer to a clean piece of paper. Draw simple line art of items you would like to accessorize your pumpkin with - such as: leaves with vines, a cat, bones, stones around the door, a skull for decoration, mini tombstones, etc. Create your own spooky fairy world!<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Place the paper under the silicone mat and trace the <br />
outlines with the Mod Melter.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can use a hot glue gun but it won't dry as smooth and as flexible as a Mod Melted piece. I start at the edges and fill in by going around to the center.</div>
<div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgevzF2kV8l8LMBN6ZICMpAihhgW8K20bxkaXVa0AIPJFNADHsExW76fGYHIhCJ5sSVA8xgeAyUDV8gzH_3jZ5mFzR4weMaVlyKY9FDYPo1QrkOmqbuhR07CUPYZztdpeliJURsRx7p-uVd/s1600/IMG_3068.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgevzF2kV8l8LMBN6ZICMpAihhgW8K20bxkaXVa0AIPJFNADHsExW76fGYHIhCJ5sSVA8xgeAyUDV8gzH_3jZ5mFzR4weMaVlyKY9FDYPo1QrkOmqbuhR07CUPYZztdpeliJURsRx7p-uVd/s400/IMG_3068.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">See how smooth everything is? Great painting surface!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
After everything cooled, I painted everything in a coat of white FolkArt Home Decor Chalk paint. This covers the glossy finish of the melts and gives the acrylic a nice primed base. (I cut the leaf edges with scissors to make them jagged.)<br />
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
I painted all of the items in FolkArt Multi-Surface paint so if I want to place the pumpkin outside I can. After everything dried completely, I added window panes using a regular hot glue gun. The panes are a sanded piece of plastic with yellow marker colored over it.</div>

I could recreate the look using popsicle sticks, an embroidery hoop, dowels and little "s" hooks. Plus I could use a new Plaid products that has just reached the market FolkArt® Ultra Dyes! And bonus their wood burner tool too!!<br />
<br />
I started off with the supplies.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVbfEhtJ0zdyjCWEpUbWfFpDHKzlunO-TNYlvQi-WtRY_Enti6_uF8QYUNM7Lllx9_LcdL98jS2TG9D7KX0AR04f8Lw02YmJXMPOyUNC6qOJ2m-gyXI2jPKHjYIVYYIRGPoHxmDBa84d31/s1600/IMG_2047.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVbfEhtJ0zdyjCWEpUbWfFpDHKzlunO-TNYlvQi-WtRY_Enti6_uF8QYUNM7Lllx9_LcdL98jS2TG9D7KX0AR04f8Lw02YmJXMPOyUNC6qOJ2m-gyXI2jPKHjYIVYYIRGPoHxmDBa84d31/s400/IMG_2047.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I wood burned inspirational sayings on each stick. Then painted each front and back with the array of dyes. I didn't wash my paintbrush between similar colors so I could create the continuous colorful ombré effect. I laid the sticks on a long piece of double stick tape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrK0ABuJANaTwGyPveV1LgJzS2VfHH-rSD-mdKSx-50OxRGw2t2xWVQcPJQAWHAkTxyWRYa31gHOn6HuBYtcsfax5JUOWxqsmxWpYT-laaElFa8LeIBviOCtWbnaCkF50eim5wqs6uYJYP/s1600/IMG_2050.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrK0ABuJANaTwGyPveV1LgJzS2VfHH-rSD-mdKSx-50OxRGw2t2xWVQcPJQAWHAkTxyWRYa31gHOn6HuBYtcsfax5JUOWxqsmxWpYT-laaElFa8LeIBviOCtWbnaCkF50eim5wqs6uYJYP/s400/IMG_2050.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I then drilled a small hole in the end of each stick and holes all around the embroidery hoop. I inserted small cup hooks to the ends of the dowels. I attached all of the sticks and hung the piece from a fabric wrapped single lightbulb fixture.<br />
<br />

I have randomly taken these at my studio worktable over the past few months. I enjoy seeing how other people work and what their workspace looks like. I always start out with a organized table, then slowly it becomes messy the more I come up with and try. I start with a sketch, but then I "audition" lots of items before I decide on the final look. Enjoy looking!</span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">When I was a young girl just beginning to notice boys, probably around the age of 11, my daddy sat me down and told me the story of "The Squeezed Tomato". My mom had heard the story from Pat Boone who was a guest on the Mike Douglas Show back in the early 70s. She shared it with my dad and either he or both of them repeated the story to me and my two sisters throughout the years.</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">The story went something like this...</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Once there was a bright red, lovely tomato at the grocery store. She sat with all of the other tomatoes waiting to be chosen to leave the produce section. Boys were the shoppers. They would come by and "squeeze" the different tomatoes that "let" them. Now, be aware that a tomato has the power to stay sitting on the shelf. The boys cannot pick her up unless she agrees to let him. You can talk and smile at boys as you remain on the shelf. Smiling and being friends with the boys is fine. This way you will stay a bright red, lovely tomato. </span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">BUT, if you allow the boys to pick you up and squeeze you, then you can become bruised and rotten. Especially if you allow a LOT of boys to squeeze you! And who wants a rotten, squishy tomato? Yuck! Not many boys, when there are other bright red, lovely tomatoes to choose from. So always remember, "Don't be a squeezed tomato!" One day when your future husband comes into the store he will see you as the bright red, lovely tomato that you are!</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span></span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I shared the story with my daughter, and hopefully she will tell her child. There were a few modifications I made to the story. Like, it's ok if you don't want to leave the store; it's cool if you just hang with your tomato girlfriends and choose to not be on "display";</span></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: white;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">making a mistake doesn't mean your rotten; you get the idea. But the story's general message of self-worth is there. Simple, easy to understand. I have never forgotten it.</span></span></span></div>

At least once a week I do some quick sketches of doll concepts that have been on my mind. I set the drawings aside, then glance through them every day or so. Last week I sketched on Monday; made 23 little clay skulls on Tuesday; did laundry on Wednesday; made four "bodies" on Thursday and cleaned house on Friday. That was my week. BUT if you were inside my brain all week you would know something was brewing with the Monday sketches.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Friday night I felt bad that I hadn't made one doll all week. I started working on the new superhero idea. </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I love the idea of superheroes. Even more, I love the innocence of children's belief in superhuman powers. I bought this cool t-shirt at a thrift store that looked like it had been printed from a comic book. The screen printed design had the words "POW" and "TNT" in great comic book colors. Well, once I decided how to cut the fabric everything else just flowed. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Have you ever read the book </span></span><u><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Flow-Psychology-Experience-Mihaly-Csikszentmihalyi/dp/0060920432"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #990000;">Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience</span></span></a></u><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">? It is about being happy and when you are "in the flow" everything else falls away and you are in the moment with whatever task you are performing. I highly recommend reading it. The author explains that once you master a task you cannot get "back in the flow" until you push yourself to go beyond your set skills. Interesting stuff.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Saturday morning came bright and sunny and so did my creative energies! To my studio to regroup and clean the "designing mess" from the night before. Every superhero need a worthy villain, right? Hence, Hector The Masked Villain was born, also available at etsy. (Dave though he looked like he had S&M tendencies but I refuse to go there!) </span><br />

With that accomplished, I hand stitched a zipper around the doll's head. What if I cut the head open? Now this has a lot of possibilities...Frankenstein, zombie brains, removable brains; lots of new ideas for dolls!</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> </span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">But I had just finished a fuzzy white and pink striped jumpsuit. That didn't go with the "removing brain idea". Pink is girly. Can still be creepy though. What if I don't add a brain? Airhead Annie was born! Her skull opens up to reveal nothing. It did take me most of Sunday morning to finish all of the hand stitching of the striped jumpsuit. Listing her on etsy tomorrow.</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Saturday night Dave and I watched a documentary on the history of burlesque. It was so interesting on how the original burlesque women started in the business. Burlesque became popular during the depression when women needed to make money any way possible. Some made $1,000 a week! Most didn't love the work but needed the money to support their families. And a lot were married. Anyhow, that's where my next doll idea emerged from. I quickly made her. She just came together easily with items I gathered around the studio - presenting Betty Burlesque. I haven't listed her yet. Still kinda attached to her. I may keep her for awhile. Oh yeah, you just gotta see her backside, it's lovely! (I added and old garter clip at her shoulder blades to hang her on the wall.)</span></span></div>

What a blessing she has been in our lives. Dave and I wanted a child we could share our creative and crazy life with and Annabelle added to our lives in more ways than we could imagine! She is the perfect blend of both of us. The best of both of us. Funny, artistic, compassionate, sweet, creative, curious, thoughtful, patient, kind, determined, steadfast, loyal, quirky, driven, loving, affectionate and most of all an exceptionally good person.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">She is more than we could have hoped for. I have loved the past 16 years with her; watching her grow and discover life. Here are just a few photos of her life and how she has grown into a beautiful young woman, inside and out.</span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I started these two mummies because I was inspired by the vintage hair wrap bandage I bought on one of my antique adventures. A few days after I made the bodies, my daughter Annabelle had a bad long boarding fall. She had not been skateboarding for awhile and was a little rusty to say the least. She was with her cute boyfriend, Isaac and a good friend, Reed both of who are avid skateboarders. They were street skating and the road was rough and she got going too fast so she jumped off to stop and fell - HARD. She was very proud of the fact she never cried. Both boys said they would have because it was the "worst fall they had every seen." They skated until they got to a store to get bandaids. I didn't get the call she had fallen until she was in our driveway. Smart girl. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">She terrifically scraped her hip, knee, left hand and wrist, and right wrist. Boy was she achy the next day. Her dad was not too happy. She said to look on the bright side, at least she was wearing jeans and not her shorty shorts she was planning on wearing! Small miracle. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Hence, my dolls took on a new meaning for me. The bigger one became "Mummy Loves You" (because a mother loves you even when you do something stupid) and the smaller doll became Mummy Skater with injuries in all of the matching places on Annabelle. I did add one to the head for effect only!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Yet you notice, Mummy Skater does not have a skateboard...it's because her Mummy took it away for awhile and gave her a yo-yo instead. Annabelle would disagree with this storyline but hey, it's my doll!</span></span></div>

Lots of first with the Doo Nanny Folk Festival. First festival, check. First time packing my car for a show & camping, check. First time camping in my van, check. First awesome feedback on my dolls at at show, check. First time experiencing a mini-tornado while standing outside, check. First time repacking my van with soaking wet camping and show gear, check. First time having to jump my van twice in a 3 hour period, check. Are we having fun yet? </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Seriously, Annabelle and I had an awesome experience with the exception of the sudden mini-tornado thunderstorm. I definitely could have done without THAT!</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">We set up on Friday, March 24th in beautiful weather by the "gator pond". </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Directly across from us was a porch where fiddlers played cajun and bluegrass all day. Awesome! We arranged the booth, then arranged the inside of the van for sleeping. Hung little curtains all around the windows, inflated the double air mattress, organized our food and painted our faces for the Possum Trot Auction. Ready for the weekend!</span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">There was a steady crowd and tons of cool music, folk art and funky people to see. I had so many great comments on my dolls and on all of my work really. My favorite was a woman who came back after an hour saying she loved just standing in my booth because it made her happy. That was so nice to hear. When you are creating in your studio week after week and only your family tells you that your stuff looks good, it's nice to have people who don't know you respond to your work and "get" where you are coming from.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">By 3:30, I had sold about 10 pieces and many people were "making the rounds" to see what they were going to spend their cash on. Annabelle had painted a half a dozen faces and took a break to walk around and take pictures. Around four my dad called to ask if I was ok. I said yes, great actually! Why? He said they were having a helluva storm up in Atlanta and tornado warnings were all over Alabama. I said really? It's sunny here. Sprinkled a couple of times but nothing big. He said to be sure and move my car if the rain came so I didn't end up in the gator pond. Ha, ha! Thanks dad!</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">His call did get me up and out of my booth. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Annabelle was running into the booth, grabbing a tarp and spreading it open when a mini-tornado/massive thunderstorm struck. Everything on my shelves started flying so we grabbed things as they fell and threw them into the center of the booth on the tarp. The wind was pulling the metal walls apart and my lovely canvas & burlap walls every which a way and the RAIN was torrential! </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Annabelle and I were grabbing the paintings and dolls as fast as we could and piling them in the tarp. I cannot tell you how soaked everything was getting! Earlier in the day when it had rained, I and other customers stood in the booth and talked. If it had rained harder, I was planning on calmly packing all of my stuff away in the suitcases I had stacked in the booth. I had NO TIME. I will admit, I am almost always in control of a situation. I can usually think ahead, prepare, and I am calm in stressful situations. Geez, I survived a hurricane in Florida in 2005. But NOT OUTSIDE! So I lost it a little...so did my poor Annabelle.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Part of the reason we had to stop removing items from the walls was because we had to gather up the tarp. The ground was flooding underneath our feet. Luckily an angel appeared, Lisa Shoemaker. A Doo-Nanny veteran I had met earlier that morning. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">She said she was riding out the storm and helping others when she remembered me and it that was my FIRST festival. She ran to find us both crying in my booth, soaking wet, holding a tarp full of my art. She said later, she wished she had a photo of how pitiful we looked!</span><br />

To which Annabelle just stared and said, "No." <br />She just replied, "Oh. Bummer." She continued walking in the rain.</span></span></span></span></span></td></tr>

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Lisa helped us dry off the items as the rain subsided. We decided then I should return home so that I could "dry-out" my dolls and wet paintings. Most vendors had items that were ok to get wet. Not mine. Also, Lisa explained if I was going to do outdoor festivals I would need to invest in the $1,000 tents that completely zip shut on all sides. Even though, several of those tents didn't work in this storm. It came so quick, the artists couldn't get their side down fast enough.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">So long story short, we had to repack the car with all of the wet stuff I had slid out so I could move the car; load 5 soaking wet cloth walls; my door and window had been left open so my drivers</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">'s side was wet. We had to search and gather Annabelle's face painting supplies. She had covered them with a tarp but all of it just blew away. We found a few things. And to top it off, my car wouldn't start. So angel Lisa helped us jumped start it, twice! </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">We left at 9:30 pm to make the 3 hour drive back home. Again, in a torrential downpour.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">All in all, it was an incredible experience. We made our money back for doing the show and a little profit, made some new friends, and learned a valuable lesson from Mother Nature. When we got home, this before and after of one of my dolls sums up the show.</span><br />

I can have stuff to sell but without booth photos you can't really apply to most festivals. The </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><a href="http://www.blogger.com/goog_1073150721"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">Doo</span></a></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><a href="http://www.doo-nanny.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">-Nanny</span></a> was such a godsend! They didn't require a booth photo to attend and it inspired me to get one made by the Doo-Nanny date of March 25-27. It happen to coincide with the other festival applications due now. I also think it's pretty serendipitous that my first festival should have the name "</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Doo</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">" in it! <br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">My first show (not on Dave's coat tails) is coming up March 25-27, 2011- The <a href="http://www.doo-nanny.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">Doo-Nanny Outsider Folk Art Show</span></a> in Seale, Alabama. I stumbled upon this show researching different artists who inspire me with their work, philosophy, etc. I was googling <a href="http://www.museumofwonder.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">Butch Anthony</span></a> and up came <i>his</i> festival! He started it as a roadside folk art show in 1996. Now it is open to artists of all walks of life. The only requirement is you must make and create whatever you sale. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I have loved folk art all my life. My mom collected antiques and mammie dolls and little pickinny handmade dolls because they reminded her of her childhood. I loved the creativeness of the handmade dolls and vintage little items she displayed around our house. Dave and I began seriously collecting folk art over 15 years ago and we attend the North Trade Center Folk Festival in Atlanta every year. So this micro festival seems like a good fit for me.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Now, it does have a few considerations...primitive camping at your booth (no electricity) on 80 acres, first-come-first set up space, bring a free carnival game kids can play, port-a-potties, a "hillbilly spa" of outdoor showers and tubs, and a communal kitchen. But the music, movies, art and artists make it worth it. Plus, it does sound like a lot of fun!</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">My sister, Julie, has agreed to go with me and Annabelle. Julie is the absolute perfect helper to have. She never meets a stranger; is game for ANYTHING; can figure anything out; loves to camp, build fire, and construct anything; laughs and has an awesome sense of humor. If she wasn't going, I probably wouldn't be going. Annabelle is excited for the "Woodstock" atmosphere of hanging out with cool people.</span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">The vintage shot glass set I purchased this past Saturday now has a permanent home at our kitchen bar. Meet: (top) Gun Shot, Short Shot, and Big Shot, (inside) Poor Shot, Double Shot, and Shot to Hell. I used an old wooden cheese box as a shelf and three of the shot glasses fit perfectly inside. We already had another divided wooden box we use to collect paper coasters, beer caps and corks. </span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">The bar began as an old shelf unit I purchased at a flea market. It was already painted a fabulously bright yellow and had just the right amount of nicks and scuffs. It originally held my cookbooks, but we soon discovered that it would be perfect as a small bar in the kitchen to hold the makings for our "evening cocktails". Instead of gathering the items </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">every</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"> night, why not make them easily accessible? <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">My first doll I can remember making was from a kit. Sock Monkey was created back in 2002 during my summer vacation. I spend a week every summer on Star Island with my husband and daughter at a Unitarian Universalist family conference called All Star I. We meet each year with the same family and friends. We have close, lifelong friends we only see once a year. It's a very special place filled with love and LOTS of laughter.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">It was during one of these weeks, rocking on the hotel front porch, that I attempted to make a simple sock monkey using an easy to follow kit. You see, my friends all have hand crafts they do on the front porch; lots of knitting, beading, sketching and did I mention knitting? Karen, one of my BFFs, every year would patiently teach me to knit. I would knit a lonnnngg scarf and then promptly forget how to knit until the next year. I would usually just sit and tell funny family stories and entertain everyone while they worked.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">The year of the Sock Monkey I decided to participate by making something more "me". But I didn't realize how hard it would be to read directions, sew, stuff, AND tell funny family stories. Each day, something was wrong with what I had sewn. And being a crafter, I would think to myself I can fix that later or that's ok it gives it character. Needless to say all of my women friends gathered everyday to work with me so they could laugh at the mistakes I <i>truly</i> innocently made! They weren't laughing <i>at </i>me they were definitely laughing <i>with </i>me. I would recheck the instructions and realize I'd made yet <i>another</i> mistake! Sock Monkey still brings back so many good memories of me and my friends laughing ourselves into tears.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">So here's my Sock Monkey. I love her. Looking back, I used vintage buttons for eyes, appliquéd a heart and didn't follow directions but did my own thing. It took me nearly 10 more years to revisit doll making, but look how far I have come!</span></span>Suzanne Cookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04141699632701331432noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-509498035293867979.post-91914749230898013932011-02-17T14:36:00.001-05:002011-02-17T17:44:18.569-05:00Where Do My Dolls Come From?<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I just finished three new dolls and added them to my shop. As I am photographing them, I realize I have developed crazy stories in my head for each one while I was making them. </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Believe it or not, this is a new revelation for me. Being crazy is not.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">The process of creating dolls is still fairly new to me in my life of crafting. I use to only craft or paint when I would get inspired to make something I saw I liked but couldn't afford or thought I can do that, why pay for it? I think I have made maybe two dolls my entire life. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

He is a pretty well-known artist in Atlanta for his tongue-in-cheek horror art, roller girl poster art and zombie portraits. You can see his cool stuff at his </span><a href="http://www.idrawmonsters.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #cc0000;">I Draw Monsters</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"> website. </span></span></div>

I'm not crazy superstitious or anything, but thinking others </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">might </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">use my dolls for ill will or good for that matter I didn't like. I knew I wanted to make dolls out of old items of my grandmothers, my childhood, personal old clothing and jewelry, antique finds and thrift store items. So who knew what all that may bring with the world of voodoo. Playing with words to not be voodoo but still a little creepy, Who </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Doo</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"> was born. Call me crazy, but it slowly emerges to me with a complete personality! (I know, I just creeped out on voodoo makers and hear I'm telling you my dolls have complete personalities. I told you I was a little crazy!)</span></span></div>

It is a very cool print but a little freaky with a big eyed girl sitting on a staircase in space. It has some scratches and the colors have faded some through the years. Maybe a "Highway to Heaven" theme? Who knows. The poster is big, 36"w x 28"h. Sorry the original photo is so tiny but I forgot to take a beginning photo. I got so excited to get started!</span></span><br />

My plants need that!! I love my houseplants. Especially in the winter when there is not much greenery around. PLUS my backyard is full of moss! We get ALOT of shade in the summer and in Georgia, heat, moisture and shade equals moss.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I was planning on watering my plants today anyway, so what's a couple of hours of "plant" work instead of "studio" work. My plants inspire me, so maybe this trick will inspire you to baby your plants today or buy some plants to baby! Also, we are to get a little ice and snow tonight so I better do this today! Right?</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">First, I went in the backyard and dug (or actually "lifted") moss pieces in sheets.</span></span><br />

Love seeing where all the "magic" happens, so here's mine to show you. It is in my basement in the suburbs of Atlanta. I know I am lucky to have such a big space where I can leave it messy and go upstairs and close the door! Plus, I am also fortunate to have a daylight basement, where in the last afternoon, beautiful sunlight streams in. We took the confining ceiling tiles out a couple of years ago. The gigantic workstation with flat files and drawers was custom built by my dad back in 1992. It has moved from office to studio to home with us through the years. It is a heavy beast and filled to the gills! That's my corgi, Dexter, posing so politely by my chair.</span></span><br />

I love to create, collect, decorate, rummage, procrastinate with art, laugh, share stories about my life and TALK! I have to see how typing instead of talking goes. Some of my friends have suggested video blogging, but I will give this a whirl first. At least I can remain in my "go-to" outfit as I blog! (Light purple long johns I spent a whole whoppin' $7 on!) Comfort is important to me. I am working on launching my blogspot and Big Cartel shop today. My husband Dave is not too thrilled helping on Super Bowl Sunday but he's tired of me saying, "When I get my blogspot and shop..." Now I have to put my money where my mouth is. Here it goes!</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I started creating dolls this past year after leaving a stressful job. Art has always been where I could </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black; font-family: Times;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">de</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: black; font-family: Times;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">-stress. Relax. Breathe. My first two dolls were inspired by my husband and me. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">They both sold at my first show at DragonCon 2010. I rode on my husband's coat tails and put my dolls in his booth. I got a lot of good feedback and encouragement from fellow vendors and convention fans. I decided instead of getting another "real job" I would try my hand at being a full-time artist. I still produce a few graphic projects on the side, but I want to dedicate most of my time to art. I plan on sharing what inspires me, projects in progress, other artists, and my evolving studio. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Hope you enjoy my site.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> Come back again real soon!</span>Suzanne Cookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04141699632701331432noreply@blogger.com0
